A ShopRite employee was taken into custody after a newborn baby was found inside the bathroom of a Westchester grocery store, according to police. Police in White Plains were called early Sunday to the ShopRite in the City Center shopping complex after the infant was found in a women’s room. Officers rushed the baby to White Plains Hospital, where the child was said to be recovering as of Monday, police said. Child protective services for Westchester County was aiding in the child’s future care. After crime scenes had been processed or were close to completion, a suspect was identified and taken into custody. The individual’s name had not yet been released, but White Plains Public Safety Commissioner Wade Hardy said a 32-year-old ShopRite employee had been taken into custody. The police department was working with the county district attorney’s office regarding potential criminal charges. An investigation is ongoing. As the investigation continues, police reminded the public about New York state’s “Safe Haven” law, which is designed to prevent tragedies.
