The proposed constitutional amendment aim s to change the number of state lawmakers required to overturn or alter statutory initiatives that voters have approved from two-thirds of the state legislature to four-fifths. The constitutional amendment also requires the same four-fifths threshold to pass new laws affecting the initiative and referendum process, and places additional protections around the people’s ability to bring initiatives.” Their issues include protecting earned paid sick leave, minimum wage, school vouchers, medical marijuana, and more. Evnen says the rejection is due to an objection filed by Omaha State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh and former Henderson State Senator Curt Friesen, arguing that the initiative is not limited to a single subject. According to the release, it is up to the Secretary of State to make the initial determination on whether the objection has merit and whether the initiative should be certified for the ballot. After initially collecting more than 186,000 petition signatures, supporters of Respect Nebraska Voters initiative issued a statement, saying they plan to challenge this decision in court.   ...read more read less
