I am writing to add my voice to the growing community conversation regarding the Bonanza 5-Acre parcel. It is deeply frustrating that our volunteer Planning Commission is bearing the brunt of public anger over a development plan handed down directly by the City Council. By law, the Planning Com mission has a strictly administrative mandate. They are required to evaluate whether a project fits existing code criteria, not to debate macro-level community intent. Funneling hundreds of upset residents into their hearings serves only to shield the City Council from facing the political music of their own constituents during this time.  This parcel was originally purchased by Park City Municipal using taxpayer resources under an explicit commitment: It would be preserved for significant civic, arts and community benefits. Shifting the focus to an ordinary, high-density residential and retail development with an insubstantial public footprint feels like a classic bait and switch. On top of that, the traffic study showed it will add 1,200 cars per day to the area, which our streets could never efficiently support. There is an overwhelming consensus among the residents I speak with that this current iteration is fundamentally flawed. Why are we rushing the approval process on our last major in-town undeveloped parcel? It is my opinion that the City Council must hit the pause button, withdraw the current plan from the Planning Commission’s agenda, and again host genuine public workshops.
