Several East Bay high school football players and their families were upset after a press box parents constructed during Spring Break was torn down by the school district on Wednesday. The press box was built in April after parents at College Park High School in Pleasant Hill after they claimed t he school district ignored their request to build one for years. “I was here for the construction of it. I actually went inside the booth once it was built. It had marble countertops. It had a place for the visiting team, it had a place for the home team to do stats. It had a place for the announcer and scorekeepers,” But on Wednesday, the district took it down, just two days before the start of the season. Kids say they watched the destruction as they practiced for their first game. “They tore it down and kind of made our school and our players a little sad. I didn’t like how it made us feel,” high school football player Braylen Coleman said. Superintendent Dr. Adam Clark says he had no choice but to remove it. He says all structures over 6 feet high must be approved by the Division of State Architecture, a process that takes at least a year. “It wasn’t approved by the State Architecture, it wasn’t approved by our contractor, it wasn’t approved by our maintenance folks,” he said. “If it were to come down during an earthquake or if it were to catch fire then the liability is off the charts.” Parents say they understand some rules were sidestepped but they’re upset the district couldn’t find a compromise without tearing it down. Now, they’re hoping they can get the ball rolling to do it the right way. “Let’s get this process going. Let’s start doing what we need to do. Let’s sit down and have a conversation,” Carolyn Babcock, a parent, said.
