INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) -- Two members of Indiana's best political team Friday said the latest trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada will likely hurt Indiana consumers and producers.President Donald Trump has announced a new rou nd of tariffs against Canada, and that country's leaders have imposed their own retaliatory tariffs in response.Canada bought $12.9 billion worth of goods in 2025, more than any other country except Italy, according to the U.S. Trade Representative.During a panel discussion for "All INdiana Politics," Republican strategist Lacey Berkshire said the trade dispute likely will hurt Indiana farmers and manufacturers, though she added short-term pain might be worth it if it leads to a better trade deal."I think it's worth the risk if we end up in a better deal at the end of it, right? That's kind of the only time tariffs actually makes sense," she said.Democratic strategist Brad Boswell said free trade keeps prices down and markets stable, so Indiana consumers are especially vulnerable to the latest round of tariffs."We're one of the largest manufacturing states in the country," he said.
