A year after the Smitty’s Supply explosion devastated parts of Tangipahoa Parish, the company is beginning to plan its comeback in Roseland, even as environmental investigations and cleanup efforts continue, Louisiana Illuminator reports.  The August 2025 disaster destroyed much of the facility, affected roughly 450 workers and sent millions of gallons of petroleum products into nearby waterways. Since then, cleanup crews have recovered more than 13 million gallons of petroleum, and Smitty’s says it has completed all cleanup tasks required by the EPA under its Superfund agreement.  However, the overall cleanup is not finished. State regulators continue to find oil sheens, petroleum contamination and elevated levels of PFAS, leading the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality to demand a new remediation plan in June.  Despite these concerns, Smitty’s is laying the groundwork to rebuild and restart operations. In a July permit renewal application, the company reported that about 4.5 million gallons of petroleum storage capacity remain at the site. It is assessing surviving tanks and drainage systems and plans to build new warehouses within two to three years.  Smitty’s contends that reopening would provide important economic benefits while its corrective actions and planned environmental improvements address remaining concerns.
