Jalen Hurts has had to shoulder a lot this summer as the Eagles make a massive offensive shift to run a new scheme under new OC Sean Mannion. As training camp ended on Wednesday, where is Hurts’ command of this offense? “I feel like I’m in a good spot,” Hurts said after Day 17 of camp. “Feel like I’m in a good spot. It think it’s about really looking at the experiences. The experiences don’t mean anything until you reflect on them and grow from them and you start to apply them. “So we’re very widespread in what we’re doing right now and I think that’s good. And so when we can hone it down and kind of see who we are, establish exactly what the identity is for us, it’ll come together. So still very early.” While this offense is new for just about everyone, Hurts is still the quarterback and the leader on that side of the ball. Veteran Hollywood Brown has been impressed by Hurts’ command. Brown said he sees that command from Hurts in the huddle, at the line and in his ability to help everyone else with their responsibilities. “Yeah, I know it’s new for everyone,” Brown said, “but he’s definitely taking good command of it and taking that and getting better each day with it.” Over the past few weeks, Hurts and this new offense have had plenty of ups and downs. And some of that is to be expected. This new offense is going to look very different from the versions we’ve seen from Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts in the past. On top of that, DeVonta Smith, Makai Lemon and Lane Johnson all missed time this summer and the Eagles’ defense is one of the best in the NFL. So Hurts had to deal with them all camp too. One of the likely byproducts of all that has been an increase in interceptions from Hurts this training camp. Hurts has generally been very good at protecting the football in his NFL career, but he was intercepted way more than normal over the last few weeks. While it’s obviously not a good thing to throw interceptions — it’s never ideal — the key is that Hurts is able to learn from making mistakes in a practice setting. “I think, generally speaking, you learn from every play,” Hurts said. “Regardless of how the result is, especially when you’re putting in something new. I think every time we come out here and we get a chance to get on the grass, we want to take the coaching, go apply it, be aggressive in it. And then with you’re experiences, you reflect on them, think about them and then say, ‘OK, you can play the game in this type of way, you can play the game in that type of way.’  “And so I think I used the term calibrating with you guys. That whole entire process builds in your mind on how you’re calculated when you play the game. It’s been a really good camp. I’m happy about the experiences we’ve had to be able to grow from them.” As Hurts explained, the Eagles have been widespread in camp, but he clearly expects things to narrow in the regular season. Not only will they start game-planning for weekly opponents, but the Eagles will get a better sense of who they want to be as an offense and can then shorten the playbook. There will likely be some trial and error early in the season. The Eagles this summer have been blending Mannion’s offense with some of the staples that have worked under Sirianni and Hurts before. Because of that, it’s a little difficult to know exactly what this offense is going to look like when it hits the field on Sept. 13. But we’ll find out soon enough. “It’s something that you keep in mind of when you’ve had so much success,” Hurts said. “How will it look? You don’t really know. Do you want to win? Absolutely. And so we got to figure out whose are as a team.  “Obviously, Coach comes in with a great mindset, great philosophy and putting everything together that brings us more structure. In the end, it’s about what’s going to go out there and be best for our team. And I know Sean will come ups with the answer to that over time.” ...read more read less
