One person was killed Tuesday in a Point Loma neighborhood after a report of a home burglary. San Diego Police first received a call at around 4:40 p.m. in the 2700 block of Nipoma Street for a welfare call, which was later changed to a residential burglary. After contacting the homeowners, poli ce learned that there were firearms inside the home and that no one had permission to be inside. “Due to the potential dangers of the situation, the San Diego Police Department SWAT Team responded and employed tactical methods to safely resolve the incident,” SDPD said. While attempting to make contact with the person, police said they heard gunshots from inside the home. At around 9:20 p.m., a man exited the home holding a firearm through the front door and that’s when an officer shot at the man, striking him, SDPD said. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene. No San Diego Police Department officers were injured. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department took over the investigation of the shooting. The SDSO investigates shootings involving SDPD personnel under terms of a countywide agreement designed to prevent conflicts of interest. “Once the Homicide Unit concludes its investigation, the case will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether the involved officers bear any criminal liability. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the officers’ discharge of their firearm,” SDPD said in a release.
