While other Texas cities have increased taxes to balance their books, Dallas officials aren’t going to do that. The City Council voted 8-6 to cap the rate at 69.78 cents per $100 of taxable value. They agreed with City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert’s budget recommendation, indicating of ficials could seek deeper cuts. Dallas has pursued tax rate cuts for 11 years straight, forgoing more than $200 million in revenue. Tolbert’s $5.6 billion proposal offers a slight 0.10-cent decrease to its current rate, inspiring robust debate about whether it was enough or even necessary.
