Three teenagers died, and another four people were taken to hospitals after a violent collision on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn late Tuesday, authorities say. The NYPD says officers responded to a call about a crash between a Cadillac Escalade and a Honda HRV near 65th Street in Bay Ridge shortly before midnight. Both vehicles had been traveling eastbound at the time. Three teenagers in the Cadillac, a 16-year-old, a 17-year-old, and an 18-year-old, were pronounced dead at hospitals a short time later. The nature of their injuries wasn’t clear, and their names haven’t been released. Video from the scene showed the Cadillac absolutely destroyed. The entire front section appeared caved in. At this point, investigators say it appears the Cadillac driver was moving at a high rate of speed, trying to get around a slower vehicle in the center lane of the highway, and slammed on the brakes when he moved to the right lane and found himself behind another slower-moving vehicle. The Cadillac was rear-ended by a Honda, then hit a guardrail and spun around before flipping over. Three of the five Escalade occupants were thrown from the vehicle; the two who weren’t were wearing their seatbelts, law enforcement sources said. Those two, ages 16 and 18, were taken to a hospital, along with two women in their 40s who had been in the Honda. All four of them are expected to be OK. Toxicology will be requested on the Escalade driver, who was among the three dead, as is standard protocol. According to law enforcement sources, the driver had previous summonses for speeding and unsafe lane change but no criminal record. Investigators are looking into speed, driver experience, and seatbelt use, among other factors, as possible causes. No arrests have been made.
