Loved ones are mourning a mother of two who died a hero after saving a girl from drowning at a park in New Jersey. On Monday, Aug. 24, shortly before 4 p.m., Priscila Alvares Pereira Dos Santos, 33, of Delran, New Jersey, went into the Delaware River at Amico Island Park in Burlington County to rescue a girl who was in the water. After Santos pushed the girl towards the shore, bystanders were able to pull the child safely from the water. Santos went underwater, however, and did not resurface. Several police and fire departments searched for Dos Santos for hours before suspending the search Monday at 9:45 p.m. The search then resumed on Tuesday, Aug. 25, around 6:30 a.m. Santos’ body was later found and recovered about 20 feet off the beach at Amico Island Park around 8:15 a.m. “Priscila died a hero,” Delran Police Chief Matthew Gasper said. Prior to her body being found, a man who identified himself as Dos Santos’ husband arrived at the scene Tuesday morning to support recovery efforts. At that time, he told NBC10’s Lili Zheng that his wife was 34-years-old and Tuesday would have been her birthday. He described Dos Santos — a mother of two — as an “evangelical and a heroine who gave her own life to save a child.” Also, according to the man, the child that was saved was a 9-year-old member of their family. A GoFundMe was created to provide support for Santos’ family. Police don’t believe Dos Santos’ death is suspicious at this time though they continue to investigate. The Burlington County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy. Signs around Amico Island Park and near the Delaware River warn people that swimming is prohibited, according to officials.
