A recovery effort resumed on Tuesday morning for a woman who missing in the Delaware River after, officials said, she dove in to help a girl struggling in the waters off of Riverside Township, New Jersey on Monday. SkyForce10 was over the scene on Monday night when emergency crews were conducting a water rescue effort after a woman was reported missing, officials said. Crews were searching in the Delaware River at the Amico Island Park in Riverside Township, in Burlington County, for a woman who went under the water and did not resurface on Aug. 24, officials said. According to police, the missing woman — who police did not immediately provide additional identifying information on — ran into the water to rescue a girl who was struggling in the river. The girl, officials said, was safely carried out of the water with the missing woman’s help. According to officials, the woman pushed the girl toward bystanders outside the water before she was lost in the water herself. Crews were initially called to the scene where Rancocas Creek dumps into the Delaware just before 4 p.m., said Delran Fire Department Deputy Chief Kevin Peak. “Just before 4, we got a phone into our central communications center that a subject went under the water and they weren’t sure if they resurfaced or not,” said Peak. “At the time when the reports came in, ahead was submerged, the tide was moving out. We did go through low tide, we went through slack tide, we are now coming into high tide. So the tides have shifted back to the north. It was moving water. But, as far as whereabouts they may be, we’re uncertain at this time.” Officials said the search continued until nightfall. The woman was last seen wearing a black and blue swimsuit, Peak said. The search is being classified as a recovery mission. As of about 6 a.m. on Tuesday, crews had assembled at the river to resume the search. During the morning, a man who identified himself as the missing woman’s husband arrived at the scene to support recovery efforts. At that time, he told NBC10’s Lili Zheng that his wife was 34-years-old and Tuesday would have been her birthday. He said his was “evangelical and a heroine who gave her own life to save a child.” Also, according to the man, the child that was saved was a 9-year-old member of their family. Deputy Chief Peak said that Amico Island Park is known as a family-orientated park with trails for hiking and nature gazing.
