Once a month, 43 nonprofits come to the Idaho diaper bank for their diaper allotment, and this month, they got a huge surprise. So today Im picking up a ton of diapers said Kristen Bennett with St. Luke's Home Health. Two differe nt agencies made huge donations to the states only diaper bank, amounting to close to 300 thousand diapers. Idaho Diaper Bank gets huge donationIts very exciting for the diaper bank, and really excited to see how many people we can help, said Joleen Noble, executive director for the Idaho Diaper Bank.Unlike food, theres really no federal assistance for families who need diapers, and according to the National Diaper Bank, about half of all families with kids under three are diaper insecure; a problem that Noble says costs the nation $8.5 billion.Getting a huge donation is only half the battle; you have to organize it all. Idaho News 6 witnessed 116 thousand diapers set up for 43 different agencies throughout the Treasure Valley to come pick up.It makes me so happy because weve dealt with the diaper bank for years and its such a huge service for our community, so to see such a huge donation gives me shivers, said Bennett. Its a rare opportunity for an agency that always seems to struggle to get enough diapers to meet the need. The Idaho Diaper Bank is trying to spread its reach statewide and has a goal to distribute one million diapers by the end of the year.Theyre making a big push to get the word out before National Diaper Need Awareness Week on September 14.Idaho itself has 42 thousand babies that are in need and to put that into context theres 2.2 million diapers needed per month to meet the need in Idaho and right now were doing 100 thousand diapers so we have a way to go, said Noble.Click here if youd like to do a diaper drive to help or make a donation. ...read more read less
