North Summit football team ekes out victory in season opener
Aug 21, 2026
When new North Summit Head Football Coach Dalton Ross took over for the retiring Jerre Holmes, who had been with the program for 27 years, he had a clear focus: maintain the positive direction of the program.
Holmes won 177 games during his time with the Braves and back-to-back state titles in
2007 and 2008.
Ross got off to a good start last Friday, when North Summit took on Enterprise in their season opener on the road. The Braves snuck out a 14-13 victory as Enterprise failed on a two-point conversion that would’ve likely won them the game with under two minutes to go.
Ross was confident his team would hit the ground running this season after a strong first offseason under his staff. He said they had four 6 a.m. practices a week leading up to the season.
“(The win) was really big,” Ross said. “Our seniors and upperclassmen were so good through the whole thing. There were times they could have folded it up and said, ‘This game is over,’ but they never quit, and hung in there. It just goes to show how good of kids and leaders that we have on the team.”
Senior running backs Jaden Rowser and Knox Woolstenhulme provided North Summit’s two touchdowns off the ground in the win. Senior kicker Jose Sanchez knocked through the two extra points that made the difference.
“Those guys stepped up big,” Ross said. “We kind of had to grind it out. … We probably want to throw the ball a little bit more, but the ball was wet. It rained on us.”
Ross also credited the offensive line amid tough playing conditions.
The head ball coach knows there are some things to clean up before the team’s next game, a rivalry game with South Summit. The Braves will host South Summit at 7 p.m. this Friday.
“We definitely have got to slow down their offense,” Ross said. “They’re high-potency and fast. … They’re a good team, and we respect them and are excited for the challenge.”
South Summit dominated North Summit last season en route to the 2A state title game. The Braves dominated South Summit in 2024.
Ross is focused on having his team play better each week this season. He knows everyone wants to play for state titles, but he believes the day-to-day work can lead the team there.
Ross is excited to see the Coalville community turn up Friday for the first of five regular season home games this season.
“When you follow somebody like (Holmes), there’s always a little bit of pressure,” Ross said. “He made sure, obviously, to leave our program in a good place. … Our program has always been a consistent program that has kids that represent our community in a way that our community can be proud of. I want that and to continue the tradition of North Summit football in the right direction.”
Ross is a Coalville native who played under Holmes when he was in high school.
