Tennessee officials shut down a swing ride at the state’s largest fair after it malfunctioned Wednesday night, injuring nine people and sending four to the hospital. The incident involved the Wave Swinger ride at the Wilson County-Tennessee State Fair. Reithoffer Shows, which owns the ride, told NBC affiliate WSMV4 that the ride stopped and that a few guests “came into contact with the surrounding fence” as it was coming down. Four people were transported to local hospitals for further treatment. None of the injuries reported were life-threatening, according to the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency. “Response was immediate and all guests were provided professional medical attention,” a spokesperson for the fair told WSMV4 in an email.  Ava Zotti, who was on the ride with a friend when it malfunctioned, said her group had skipped out on other rides before getting on the Wave Swinger. “I said, fair rides break all the time,” Zotti told WSMV4. “Like, I’m not going on that. That’s too scary. Let’s just do the swings. “The ride was fun until it started coming down and it just was not stopping. Because when it starts to go, you know, the swings kind of go out to the side. And we weren’t slowing down enough to come back in.” Zotti said her friend, who was seated in front of her, pushed a child out of the way before getting flipped outside the railing. She said her friend continued hitting the railing until three men ran up and got her back on the inside. “There were people who were really hurt,” Zotti said. “There was one little girl who was really, really hurt. And then a guy that was just like laying down and they had to take him out on a stretcher.” The state issued a cease-and-desist order for the Wave Swinger after the incident. The Tennessee Department of Labor Workforce Development said the Wave Swinger was inspected on Aug. 12, one day before the fair opened, and that it had a new computer system and motor installed before the inspection. All amusement devices brought into the state must have a valid inspection to obtain an operating permit. Reithoffer Shows said Thursday that “a state inspector is now examining the amusement attraction and, at this time, has found no abnormality with the ride.” The Wave Swinger cannot resume operations until the state reviews the required inspection report and determines it meets the requirements to operate. ...read more read less
