Donald Trump let the visuals do the talking during his latest White House briefing. The president regularly fills the Oval Office with executives, CEOs, athletes and celebrities, giving them a chance to pitch ideas while he takes center stage. But Wednesday’s gathering took an unexpected tu rn when Trump seemed to lose his place in the room while standing beside some of the industry’s biggest names. Trump appeared to doze off while standing during a White House crypto briefing, sparking fresh concerns about his stamina. (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images) Trump gathered some of the biggest names in crypto and finance at the White House on Wednesday, Aug. 19. People should have been impressed with the brains in the room. Instead, viewers became fixated on whether the 80-year-old president was alert. ‘Good Nap’: Trump Falls Asleep Mid-Meeting as His Staff Kept Praising Him Like Nothing Happened; His Reaction When He Heard His Name Has Fans Laughing The president hosted executives and regulators to promote U.S. leadership in cryptocurrency. He also pushed Congress to pass the CLARITY Act. Coinbase, Ripple, Robinhood and Nasdaq were among the industry heavyweights represented, including SEC Chairman Paul Atkins. Trump walked in casually, more than 30 minutes late. He eventually stood behind CFTC Chairman Michael Selig, who praised the administration’s crypto record. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we’ve codified the GENIUS Act, established a strategic bitcoin reserve, drawn a clear line in the sand between crypto securities and commodities, launched the first U.S. crypto perpetual, and protected the rights of software developers,” Selig said. As speaker after speaker praised his administration and celebrated his crypto agenda, Trump’s eyes repeatedly closed and his body appeared to sway. Despite the praise, Trump appeared to be struggling. His eyes closed. His head dipped slightly. At times, the 80-year-old appeared to sway before opening his eyes again. “Trump is struggling to stay awake,” one person joked. The cameras kept rolling. Still, Trump appeared to drift again when Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev talked about expanding ownership, protecting investors. If there are not young women around, he can’t stay awake,” one person pointed out. Another claimed, “And even then, he only stays awake if they’re blonde.” It’s no secret Trump keeps blonde women in his orbit, personally and in the White House, looking at photos of his staff and ex-wives. But some believe he dozed off because the conversation wasn’t about him, saying, “If he’s not the focus he’s out.” But the moment simply echoed Trump’s pattern of falling asleep standing up. “Sleeping Don dozing off on his feet,” one person joked. Another said, “Standing up is hard for him.” It wasn’t the first time cameras caught Trump appearing to fade while standing. During a May 4 White House Small Business Summit, Trump stood beside SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler as she praised entrepreneurs as “America’s backbone.” Trump’s eyes slowly closed. His body appeared to sway. Then Loeffler said, “Mr. President.” At that moment, he appeared to snap back to attention. A similar scene unfolded during a Jan. 3 briefing at Mar-a-Lago about the U.S. operation in Venezuela. As Gen. Dan Caine spoke, Trump stood nearby. His eyelids repeatedly closed as the briefing continued. Viewers zoomed in on his face and mouth. The footage quickly fueled another round of questions about whether he was sleeping while standing. There have been seated episodes, too. Cameras captured Trump appearing to doze during a December Cabinet meeting. He also appeared with his eyes closed during portions of the Kennedy Center Honors. In October 2025, Trump’s eyes appeared to close as adviser Stephen Miller praised him during a meeting. Trump and his administration has rejected claims that he falls asleep during public events. He has previously suggested he was simply resting his eyes. But Wednesday’s scene was harder for critics to dismiss. The former reality star wasn’t sitting through a lengthy ceremony. He was standing at a White House event devoted to an industry he has championed — and one that has helped make his family a fortune. Yet as speaker after speaker talked about America’s crypto future, Trump’s eyes kept closing. By the end, social media wasn’t debating whether the president had lost interest in crypto. Viewers were asking how he managed to fall asleep while still standing up. ‘Standing Up Is Hard for Him’: Trump Looks ‘Out’ Of It During Briefing as Viewers Zoom In on the Moment That Says Plenty Without Him Saying a Word ...read more read less
