Pet Pals TV: The world of dog trials and sports
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every week, “Pet Pals TV” shares a fun, interesting, and informative story about our four-legged and furry friend population.
On the most recent “Pet Pals TV,” host Patty Spitler was joined by News 8’s
Kaitlyn Kendall, and Camp Bow Wow Lawrence owners Mike and Kathy Underwood discussed dog sports and pet activities.
The Underwoods appeared with their three Shelties — Guinness, Bailey and Emily — and described rally as a relaxed team sport in which dogs and handlers follow a course together using posted signs.
“It’s a team sport,” Mike Underwood said. “You go through the trail and do the signs, but you do it as a team.”
The couple said rally and agility competitions provide mental and physical exercise for both dogs and their owners. They also stressed the importance of managing the dogs’ weight, particularly for agility events that require jumping.
Emily earned her Novice Jumps and Weaves agility title at Purina Farms in St. Louis. The Underwoods also competed at the Rally Nationals last year.
Kathy Underwood noted that individual runs are brief — agility dogs may be on the course for only 45 to 60 seconds — but that short burst of activity is enough to raise heart rates and benefit the dogs’ overall health.
Camp Bow Wow Lawrence’s September activities will include an Australia theme as part of the daycare’s Around the World in 2026 program, featuring Australian-themed enrichment and treats for the dogs.
The facility also will hold a Bark to School week, complete with yearbook pictures for the pups. August’s theme was Spain, tied to Spain’s World Cup win, with soccer pictures for the dogs.
“Pet Pals TV” airs Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. on WISH-TV. More information is available at PetPalsTV.com.
