The all-star team from San Diego County’s Sweetwater Valley Little League was scheduled to begin play in the Little League World Series on Thursday, but the first game was postponed due to rain in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, SVLL’s president and coach said.
The Bonita-based team was sc
heduled to play the Davenport (Iowa) Northwest Little League at 3 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time game at Howard J. Lamade Stadium. Instead, the game between the West and Midwest teams will be played at a later date and time, SVLL President Joe Griffin said.
The SVLL became the first San Diego County team to qualify for the World Series since 2016 and 13th all-time when it defeated the all-star team from Hawaii’s Kawaihau Community Little League, 11-3, in the West Region Championship Game Friday night in San Bernardino, scoring the first five runs and the final six.
Sweetwater Valley is 15-0 in its four tournaments, outscoring its opponents 114-15.
Davenport defeated the all-star team from the Whitefish Bay (Wisconsin) Little League, 7-6, in seven innings Friday at Whitestown, Indiana, to win the Midwest Region, with Anthony Johnson Jr. scoring the winning run on a wild pitch after Whitefish Bay scored twice in the top of the seventh.
Little League games are scheduled for six innings.
Davenport was 4-0 in the tournament, outscoring its opponents 37-17, including another one-run victory earlier in the tournament.
The game will be televised by ESPN2.
Two San Diego County teams have won the Little League World Series — the team representing the El Cajon-based Northern Little League in 1961 that included future San Diego State and NFL quarterback Brian Sipe and Park View in 2009.
