The pilot who was killed when his Cessna 150 airplane collided with a Pa. State Police helicopter on Wednesday has been identified by the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office as Paul Sokoloski, 57, of Hershey. According to the coroner’s office, an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026 . Sokoloski was a doctor for the emergency medicine team at Penn State Health. On Thursday, Penn State Health officials shared a statement following Sokolowski’s death. “The Penn State Health community is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Paul Sokoloski, a valued member of our emergency medicine team. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We are focused on supporting Dr. Sokoloski’s loved ones and the members of our care teams who worked alongside him and are grieving his passing,” the statement read. What happened at the Carlisle Airport? Pennsylvania State Police Lieutenant Colonel George L. Bivens said Wednesday that two troopers — identified as Corporal Bryce Corman and Trooper Jason Mills — were conducting a training exercise off the runway at Carlisle Airport, in Carlisle, at about 6:55 p.m. on Wednesday, when a plane veered off course and collided with their helicopter. In a statement on Thursday, state police officials said the Cessna 150 was attempting to land when, “for an unknown reason, it veered off the north side of the runway and collided with the rear of the PSP helicopter, which was hovering in mid-air.” Both troopers in the helicopter were hospitalized. Officials said Wednesday that they are expected to survive their injuries. On Thursday morning, at an event in Adams County, Governor Josh Shapiro said one trooper had been released from the hospital while the second was still being treated. An investigation into the crash continues The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating this incident. So far, officials with the NTSB told NBC10 that investigators are headed to the site on Thursday to gather information and collect wreckage from this crash. Once that is done, the investigators will focus their work on three areas: the pilot, the aircraft involved and the operating environment, officials said.
