For the first time, most freshmen at Temple University in Philadelphia will be required to live on campus under a new policy taking effect next fall. The first-year housing policy will apply to incoming undergraduate students under the age of 21, requiring them to live in university housing durin g the first two semesters of their enrollment at Temple. This is all a part of the university’s broader focus on student success outlined in their strategic plan, Forward with Purpose. “The policy gives Temple an important opportunity to strengthen student success by creating a more intentional first-year experience and connecting students earlier to the people, resources and support that can help them persist and thrive,” the university wrote in a letter to students. Temple said the new housing requirement also aligns with national best practices. More than 60% of four-year residential colleges and universities maintain some form of a first-year residential policy, including many of Temple’s peer institutions within the University Innovation Alliance. The university said it recognizes that students and their families have different financial, personal and commuting circumstances and that each student’s situation will be considered individually.
