After days of positive mold tests that delayed the start of the school year, Del Sur Elementary announced on Tuesday it would temporarily relocate the entire school community to Stone Ranch Elementary School for approximately one month. Del Sur students will start the 2026-2027 school year at Sto ne Ranch Elementary on Monday, Aug. 24, a campus about an 8 minute car ride away from the Del Sur campus, according to the school’s website. School officials intend the relocation to last until Friday, Sept. 18, and for students to return to their original campus on Monday, Sept. 21. Del Sur Elementary currently serves 946 students. The relocation follows mold remediation results that found the campus mostly in the acceptable range. However, some areas still required additional attention, the school announced on Tuesday night. Rooms 124, 126, 133, 147, the multi-purpose room, the first-floor hallway, and the ceiling tiles above room 126 tested positive for “moderate” mounts of mold spores, the school described. The school hopes temporarily relocating will give the district time and full access needed to address the issues and pursue a more permanent solution without repeatedly disrupting students and staff, the school announced. On Wednesday evening, the school will continue to hold their planned Family Information Session at the Del Norte High School Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will give parents and students a chance to get answers from staff. Days of mold remediation Before Tuesday night, the school start date had been delayed for several days due to the discovery of mold spores. Previously, at least five classrooms were determined to have “moderately elevated levels” of mold, and four classrooms were found to have “elevated levels” of mold, the school stated on its website. The ranking determines the probability the mold spores are generating inside the building. The classrooms have undergone cleaning along with the ductwork. Air scrubbers and HEPA filtration and dehumidification have also being installed in all classrooms, the school said. SkyRanger 7 was over the school last week, where it showed a restoration company on site. The school had said previously that the last time the rooms were occupied was over the summer, but no concerns were reported in the classroom, and said the moisture concerns developed after the program was done. Former mold concerns at Del Sur Elementary Some parents have been upset by this because they say this happened previously, in 2024. “My son was tested for mold and it came back positive… related to building material,” Karyn Herrera told NBC 7. After Kristen Montan’s daughter tested positive for mold, she reached out to other parents on social media by creating a Facebook page that is once again regaining popularity in light of the most recent mold findings. “I took to Facebook pretty quickly after that asking for people to please reach out to our district, especially the superintendent, and make them aware of what is going on at Del Sur.” This year, parents are nervous and concerned what their children could be exposed to when school resumes. They are urging the district for transparency. “I just hope they can hear us. We’re pleading for help, for the school to work with us. To transfer kids until it’s safe to have our kids back and our teachers and I encourage every parent that is experiencing similar symptoms to come out and to use their voice,” Herrera said. Parents can visit the FAQ page on the school’s website for more information. Del Sur Elementary School opened in August of 2008 and is part of Poway Unified School District. It serves 946 students.
