We want a say
Aug 19, 2026
Much has been said about the proposed Bonanza Park development in recent weeks. Proponents of the current plan cite the need for affordable housing. It is true. Park City needs more affordable housing if we want our community to include young people and those who work here. And it is our love fo
r this community that compels us to urge the City Council to pause on this development.
Perhaps Bonanza is the right spot for more affordable housing. Or perhaps it is the right place for an accessible public park, a community arts and cultural space, and a permanent home for community events such as the Park Silly Market and Farmers Market.
Given the size of the public investment, the long-term impact of this project, and the growing interest among residents, the council should listen to the concerns of the community who want to help determine the future of this property. After a decade of planning, allowing residents to have a voice in the decision to determine how this publicly funded property should be used is both reasonable and democratic.
Before any decision is made, all relevant public information should be made available to residents, including acquisition documents, remediation costs, parking expenditures, proposed development agreements, financial analyses, developer incentives, cost estimates, and an updated traffic study. Residents deserve complete and transparent information so they can make an informed decision about the property’s future.
The council should also allow the community to participate in the discussion to determine where and how we should build the much needed high-density housing.
The citizens who paid for this property deserve a meaningful voice in deciding how it is used. This decision will shape our community for generations. Public land should remain guided by the public’s vision—not simply by the plans of private developers.
