So, 2,399 signatures on a petition regarding the 5-acre Bonanza project is a wake-up call for the Park City mayor and City Council. Of those 2,399 signatures, 1,628 signatures came from the 84060 Zip code: Park City. That is very slightly less than half the number of people who voted in the last Pa rk City election. Is there a message here? Former Mayor Jack Thomas is an outstanding architect and probably is the most level-headed mayor and leader Park City has had in recent memory. He decries the project. No one on the current council nor the mayor were there when the decisions to have an arts and culture district were made in 2017. Jack Thomas was. And now he is speaking out in a well-written article in the Aug. 15-18 edition of The Park Record. Thomas said, “What we see, from a perspective, is walls of buildings on Bonanza and Kearns. And I think it’s an overwhelming scale and none of the character, none of the amenities, none of the purpose that I think we started with.” This is a well respected architect speaking. Thomas also said, “It’s a pathetic plan, and I think you should seriously consider walking away from it or reevaluating.” There appears to be at least 2,399 others who agree with him, and that’s not counting those who just didn’t get to sign the petition. At the end of the day, the current plan is only a windfall for Brinshore Development out of Chicago. Almost $20 million in land cost, $40 million of additional cash contribution from the city to subsidize the developer. That’s almost $60 million of taxpayer money before the cost of the toxic soil cleanup, which is also a city expense, which will be some number of millions more.   This is money that could be spent on other worthwhile projects in Park City. We have plenty of other locations for affordable housing in this community. The Bonanza property is not the right one. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do the right thing. You don’t get a second chance on this one. No do overs and no mulligans as a council member recently requested. Mayor Ryan Dickey, in the same edition of The Park Record, said in an interview after the last council meeting “there are no current discussions about altering or abandoning the proposal.” Feels like he and the council members don’t read The Park Record, listen to KPCW or pay attention to Town Lift. Those 2,399 other people have made their position clear. Wake up, mayor. Wake up, City Council. The people you represent are speaking out and speaking out loudly.
