Go back to future
Aug 19, 2026
I respectfully urge Park City planners and council members to prioritize arts, culture, and the environment at the 5-acre Bonanza site, as originally intended.
Our town had the privilege of hosting the Sundance Film Festival for more than 40 years, and together the people of Park City and the fe
stival built a legacy dedicated to arts, culture and our surrounding mountains and open space.
While Sundance helped put us on the map, our community helped shape the festival into what it is today. We should preserve that spirit by honoring the initial vision for the 5-acre parcel as an arts and culture district with a strong emphasis on nature.
After many years and well-intentioned feedback, the recent 5-acre plan tries to do too much and push things too far into areas it was never intended for. I remember Robert Redford being frustrated and saying, “Focus on film!” during the years when Main Street and everything related to Sundance began to take on a profit-driven, circus-like atmosphere. Not enough people listened, and here we are.
It seems we’re facing a similar challenge with the Bonanza project. Could we please step back, identify what’s been sidetracking us, and refocus on making arts, culture and nature central to this development?
Though the Sundance Film Festival has moved to Colorado and the Kimball Arts Center has relocated to Kimball Junction, we must remember the founding principles that guided this project. Now, more than ever, we should prioritize these elements.
Imagine transforming this space for children, adults, artists and art lovers by staying true to our original vision. Let’s embrace this opportunity to celebrate and preserve the importance of art, culture and our environment, and to create a space we can all be proud of. Arts, culture and respecting nature unite us and help us grow as individuals and as a community.
