What to know about McKinney council recall effort following mosque site approval
Aug 18, 2026
After a chaotic City Council meeting earlier this month over the approval of a site plan for a mosque, a group of McKinney residents is seeking to recall over half the city’s council members.
The group cited a “loss of public confidence” in the ability of the elected officials to represent
residents, according to filings submitted last week to the city.
After hours of raucous public comment, the council unanimously approved a site plan for the McKinney Islamic Association’s proposed sanctuary, gym and classroom building, stating that the group’s plans complied with the city’s development rules.
Here’s what to know about the recall efforts: John Aselton, who is helping to organize the recall along with four others, said the effort is not only about the mosque but reflects broader concerns about city spending, transparency and infrastructure. He pointed to the city’s plans to expand the airport and build a new amphitheater over the objections of some residents.
