NC Auditor’s Office: “Decisive action” needs to be taken to improve security on CATS

RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina State Auditor’s office says “decisive action” needs to be taken to improve security on the Charlotte Area Transit System.
The office released a new report on Monday looking into safety after the murder of Iryna Zarutska on the light rail last August. The
report identifies what it calls “security concerns” and “fare enforcement failures.”
It found CATS has “inadequate systems” to prevent fare evasion, saying that about 60 percent of riders don’t pay, and that about $6.5 million is lost annually in unpaid fares.
It also found “limited interaction” between CATS and CMPD, saying only two officers are assigned to CATS’ Metro Transit unit. You can read the full report by clicking here.
