Storms linger Sunday evening before a much quieter start to the week | Aug. 16, 2026

TONIGHT
Thunderstorms remain the immediate concern this evening as a few storms could produce damaging wind gusts and very heavy downpours. The strongest storm threat should favor areas near and especially south of I-70, although Indianapolis could still see a storm move through. With
the ground extremely saturated from the recent heavy rain, even a brief downpour may aggravate ongoing flooding problems. Storm coverage should generally decrease later this evening, although another batch of showers and thunderstorms may move across southern portions of central Indiana late tonight into early Monday morning. Otherwise, expect plenty of clouds with lows in the lower 70s and west winds around 5 mph. River flooding will remain an issue even after the rain begins winding down.
TOMORROW
A leftover shower cannot completely be ruled out very early Monday morning, but conditions improve quickly after sunrise. Clouds should gradually break apart through the morning, giving way to a mix of sun and clouds and eventually a mostly sunny afternoon. Cooler and somewhat less humid air begins filtering into central Indiana with highs only reaching the lower 80s. Northwest winds around 5–10 mph will help bring the humidity down compared with this weekend. Most importantly, Monday should provide a badly needed opportunity for central Indiana to dry out after several rounds of heavy rain.
TOMORROW NIGHT
Quiet and noticeably more comfortable weather continues. Expect partly cloudy skies with lows falling into the lower 60s. North winds around 5 mph should become nearly calm overnight. While flooding along some rivers and streams will take considerably longer to improve, no significant new rainfall is expected Monday night.
TUESDAY
Tuesday may be the nicest day of the forecast. Expect plenty of sunshine, relatively comfortable humidity and highs in the lower 80s. Winds stay light, generally around 5 mph, and the atmosphere should remain too dry for meaningful rain development. This gives central Indiana a second consecutive day of favorable drying conditions.
TUESDAY NIGHT
Partly cloudy skies return with temperatures falling into the middle 60s. Winds become nearly calm and most of the night should remain dry. Clouds may begin increasing somewhat toward Wednesday morning as the next weather system approaches from the west.
WEDNESDAY
The quiet stretch begins to break down Wednesday. The morning may still start dry, but clouds increase as warmer and more humid air begins returning to Indiana. Showers and thunderstorms become more likely during the afternoon, especially after about 2 p.m. Highs reach around 80 degrees with light west winds around 5 mph. There is still some uncertainty regarding exactly how widespread Wednesday’s storms become, but the afternoon and evening currently look like the periods most likely to bring renewed rainfall.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Showers and thunderstorms remain possible through the evening and portions of the overnight period as the next disturbance moves through. Lows fall into the lower to middle 60s with light northeast winds around 5 mph. Given the ongoing high river levels and saturated ground, any locally heavy thunderstorm rainfall will be worth watching, although the setup does not currently look as consistently wet as the pattern central Indiana has just experienced.
7 DAY FORECAST
The most important change in the forecast is the arrival of a much-needed dry stretch Monday and Tuesday. Storms remain possible through tonight, and ongoing river flooding will continue even after the rain ends, but cooler and somewhat less humid air settles into central Indiana to begin the workweek. Highs remain in the lower 80s Monday and Tuesday before another disturbance brings shower and thunderstorm chances back Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. Thursday may begin with a lingering shower or storm before cooler air returns, with highs generally in the upper 70s. Friday currently looks mostly dry and pleasant with highs in the upper 70s. Rain chances become a little less certain heading into next weekend, although another disturbance could bring at least an isolated storm chance Saturday before drier weather potentially returns Sunday. Overall, the coming week looks substantially less stormy than the stretch central Indiana has just experienced.
