A longtime Wilmington, Del., luncheonette is up for sale as its owner prepares to step away from the grill after nearly six decades. August Muzzi, 77, has put Angelo’s Luncheonette in Wilmington’s Trolley Square neighborhood on the market for $690,000. He’s hoping to find a buyer who will k eep the popular breakfast and lunch spot running as Angelo’s. Muzzi has been working behind the grill since he was 17, when he stood alongside his stepfather. Now, 60 years later, he says his body is telling him it’s time for a change. “I get choked up just thinking about it. I mean your entire life has been behind this grill,” Muzzi said. The physical signs of those decades are visible inside the restaurant. Muzzi’s feet have worn through layers of linoleum near the flat-top grill as he moves back and forth preparing orders. “I don’t want to see it come, but I know it has to,” Muzzi said. The sale includes the restaurant property at the corner of Scott and Gilpin streets, along with an upstairs apartment. The property also has a large sidewalk area outside. Regulars at Angelo’s say the luncheonette is about more than just the building and the food. “It’s the food, it’s the people. Like I said, I call it the “Cheers” of luncheonettes. Everyone knows your name, and it’s a good way to start your day,” regular customer Rich Kilmon said. Muzzi may not be ready to leave the restaurant behind completely. He said he would consider working part time for whoever buys the restaurant. “Don’t laugh. If they offered it to me a couple days a week, I would definitely consider it,” Muzzi said. Retirement would be a major lifestyle change for Muzzi, who said he doesn’t have many interests outside the restaurant. “I’m very worried because of this place. I don’t have any outside interests, if you will, so I’m going to have to change my entire lifestyle,” Muzzi said. There is no buyer yet and no firm date for Muzzi to leave Angelo’s Luncheonette.
