Government officials joined community leaders, business owners, and residents of Inwood in Upper Manhattan to discuss response plans for the event called “Dyckman Takeover 3” on social media. They allege that it is a gathering of young people similar to the one that occurred after the Dominic an National Day Parade on Sunday, August 9. Following the end of the parade on Sixth Avenue, thousands flooded Dyckman Street and the surrounding area, clogging traffic and vandalizing businesses. The first time was after the Dominican Day Parade in the Bronx. Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa sent a strong message on Friday. “We will not tolerate you treating our community the way we saw last Sunday, where there were hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage to our cars in the community, to our small business owners and even a young man lost his life,” De La Rosa said. Authorities are preparing to deal with possible unrest. “We’re going to have 700 police officers in the area, and Dyckman Street is going to be closed from one end to the other,” the councilwoman continued. Last weekend, more than 25 cars were damaged in the area; some were used to climb onto the roof of a gas station, which was used as a dance floor. Half a mile away, a fight left two people stabbed; one of them, a Long Island resident, lost his life. The chaos also impacted local businesses, many of which had to clean up litter on Monday. “They destroyed a lot of property and affected businesses,” said Axel Gutiérrez, an employee of a local business. “Hopefully that won’t happen again this week.” Telemundo 47 and NBC New York reached out to the New York City Police Department for comment and are awaiting a response regarding the security plan, but area leaders have confirmed that they are in contact with authorities and that there will be an increased police presence this weekend. ...read more read less
