A woman accused of vandalizing the World War II Memorial on the National Mall was arrested and appeared briefly in court on Friday. The memorial was found spray painted Thursday, and bubbles overflowed from a fountain. In a brief statement Friday morning, U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro anno unced that her office was filing two felony charges against Melissa L. Farris. Pirro said the felony charges are “depredation against property of the United States and destruction of veterans’ memorials.” The offenses carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison. “Vandalizing our World War II Memorial is a despicable attack on a sacred monument honoring the Americans who fought and died for our freedom. Those Americans include my father and grandfather,” she said. Images shared by Pirro on X show a woman wearing sunglasses looking at a camera head-on, and a woman standing near spray painted words on the memorial. According to the complaint filed in federal court, the photo seen above on the right was captured by someone who witnessed the vandalism. A U.S. Park Police officer recognized Farris as the woman in the photos because he had arrested her on Monday for illegally camping blocks away from the memorial, the court documents said. Park Police then discovered Farris had posted livestreams of herself spray painting the memorial on her Facebook page. “Our veterans fought for our freedom and if putting paint to get attention on a fountain is more detrimental than stealing 15 billion dollars from the American people starting with health and welfare from union employees, then I accept that consequence,” the woman who authorities say is Farris says in one of the videos. “Clean hands dirty money.” “Clean hands, dirty money,” was written in bright spray paint on the memorial. Before police cordoned off the area, people batted around clouds of bubbles. Farris turned herself in Friday morning, ending her most recent livestream as she walked into the courthouse in Alexandria. Farris will be transferred to the federal court in D.C., where she will have a detention hearing sometime next week. The Department of the Interior called the vandalism an “utter disgrace.” “The World War II Memorial is a sacred place to honor the service of our members of the Armed Forces and the over 400,000 Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice in WWII,” they said in a statement. “The vandalism that occurred is an utter disgrace and will not be tolerated. Our U.S. Park Police are on the scene and the investigation is ongoing. The public should know we will find the person responsible for this disgusting act.” “There are many places in our country for expression, debate, and disagreement,” said a nonprofit that preserves the memorial. “A national memorial honoring those who served and those who never returned home should never be used as a canvas for vandalism.” Farris faces felony charges after Pirro’s office dropped a felony charge against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who initially was accused of damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
