INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The duo of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell has been one of the most explosive guard combos in the WNBA. The two guards were each named WNBA All-Star Game starters this season, and the two are averaging a combined 46 points per game for the Indiana Fever. Clark’s 21 .7 points per game and Mitchell’s 24.3 points per game are both career highs. During Thursday’s practice, Mitchell, a ninth-year Fever guard, expressed how much her relationship with Clark has grown over the past few years. “As you have experiences with each other, we sit on the plane together, and you walk on the bus together, you walk in the hotel together,” Mitchell said. “Those interactions are stepping stones, and you build, and you constantly connect. I think that connection for me and CC [Caitlin Clark] is genuine. The more you get to know who a person is and you know what they bring to the table, and you don’t judge. The one thing about CC and her career is that people have already been judging her, and she’s just getting started. My job is to not be that person. If I could pour in different ways and like I said, always filling in gaps for her because of what she does and how she does it, and the eyes and ears of all the people. It’s the only thing I could do is fill in the gaps and be a good presence for her.” Mitchell has helped lead Indiana to the highest-powered offense in the league. The Fever are averaging a league-high 96.2 points per game and have scored 100 or more points as a team 15 times this season. For Mitchell, she has scored 20 or more points in each of her last 17 games, a WNBA record. Additionally, Mitchell has recorded double-digit points in the last 48 games, a franchise record. During practice, Mitchell was asked if she felt that she had taken an extra step in her game this year. “The craziest part for me is I feel like there’s another gear that I could tap into,” Mitchell said. “That’s just where my standard is. There’s so much more film to watch; there’s so much more work to put in. I take pride in how I get my work done, of how I get to my spots on the floor. A lot of the success I’ve had this year is really taking that focus serious about trying to find my spots on the floor and be confident in them.” With all the eyeballs on Mitchell’s recent success, she described how she blocks out the outside noise and focuses on the task at hand. “This is kind of new for me, but try to keep the main thing the main thing,” Mitchell said. “You just show up and play. You try to do the right thing and you just let it flow. That’s a genuine response because I can’t tell you any other way.” Mitchell is the WNBA’s second-leading scorer and has helped lead the Fever to a 21-12 record this season.
