NEWBERRY CO., S.C. (WOLO) – Newberry deputies says they’ve taken an armed barricaded suspect into custody overnight after a three and a half hour standoff.
Christopher Dale Dameron, 49, of Prosperity, faces the following charges:
• Reckless Driving
• Hit and Run with Property Damage
• Po
inting and Presenting a Firearm
• Malicious Injury to Property in Excess of $2,000
• Assault on a Law Enforcement Animal, pursuant to the new South Carolina law
According to investigators, Dameron was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Seibert Road around 10 p.m.
When law enforcement officers made contact with Dameron at his home on Dreher Island Road, he presented a firearm, pointed it at them and barricaded himself inside.
During negotiations, deputies say he knocked the law enforcement drone out of the air and destroyed it.
According to deputies, they deployed chemical munitions into the house, prompting Dameron to exit where he attempted to evade law enforcement, when a SLED K9 intervened and prevented Dameron from reentering the house.
Authorities say he assaulted the K9 during the encounter, causing the K9 minor injuries.
He was later arrested and several Newberry deputies were treated for exposure to the chemical munitions.
This incident remains under investigation.
