On Thursday, the Next Generation Action Network, Janiaca Wheeler, her daughter, and her attorneys met with Royse City Chief of Police Kirk Aldridge to review body-worn camera footage, discuss the incident, and discuss possible accountability moving forward. Edited video released one week ago show s a police officer forcefully detaining a mother, her daughter, and others outside a neighborhood pool. The family previously filed a formal complaint, and the officer involved has been placed on leave. After the meeting Thursday, the Next Generation Action Network held a news conference about what they saw. “This is probably one of the worst videos I have seen,” said Civil rights activist Minister Dominque Alexander, founder of the Next Generation Action Network. The group was able to see the moments leading up to the event, and the moments they say things escalated after a couple called the police, accusing them of having their music too loud at their neighborhood pool. “This situation would have been over had the officer left it alone, as he had instructed this family to go home and just leave,” Alexander said.”[Instead] this officer gets in his vehicle, and he says, ‘ We’re going to follow them.” Alexander said the situation took a turn when the group was asked not to step on the roadway, and one person did. “And this officer literally escalates the situation,” Alexander described escalating tensions heard on video: “On the body cam, he literally says, pull her hair to get her in the vehicle, hit her, tase her, slam her to the ground, punch the girl in the mouth.” Alexander said Royse City’s police chief confirmed the officer seen on video, who is now the subject of an internal investigation, is the training officer for the department. Alexander said that while the group did argue with officers as the event was unfolding, they also complied with police orders. The family, activists, and attorneys are calling for the officer to be fired and charges to be brought against him. “An officer like this should not be employed. An officer like this could kill someone one day,” the family’s attorney said. The Royse City Police Department dropped all charges one day after the incident. They told NBC5 in a statement: “The police department does not publicly comment on internal investigations while they are taking place. Once the internal investigation is completed, the police department will release its findings and will disclose any and all actions taken.” ...read more read less
