A 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck near San Leandro Thursday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake hit at 8:30 a.m. and was centered 2.4 miles north of San Leandro, 4.9 miles north-northwest of Ashland and 5.3 miles south-southwest of Moraga, the USGS said. “It was just like a big jolt,” Alicia Battle of Castro Valley said. “We had a few things knocked over – nothing damaged – but it was pretty strong.” The initial quake was followed by 3.0 and 2.8 magnitude aftershocks at about 9:07 a.m., according to the USGS. No damage was immediately reported. “This is not something unexpected for the Bay Area, especially for this region,” said Dr. Angie Lux, a project scientist for Earthquake Early Warning at the Berkeley Seismology Lab. “It doesn’t mean that we are going to have a big earthquake soon, but we do know at the same time that we are overdue for a large earthquake on the Hayward Fault.” Following the initial earthquake, BART temporarily held trains before allowing them to run at reduced speeds while crews completed safety inspections of the tracks.
