A man charged with drunk driving in a fatal crash allegedly didn't stop for a pedestrian crossing the road in Lake View and "just went through her," a witness told the Sun-Times.Sarah Milcarek, 25, was thrown in the air and crashed through the vehicle's rear windshield, landing in its backseat, acco
rding to prosecutors. The vehicle kept going and crashed into another car, then a tree. Milcarek had been trying to cross the street from between two cars in the 1400 block of West Irving Park Road on Saturday.“She didn’t do anything wrong. She looked both ways,” witness Liam Schalosy, 30, of Logan Square, told the Sun-Times. “We all thought he was either gonna slam his brakes or he was gonna swerve out of the way. But he just went through her.”Schalosy had been driving with his wife when he noticed a driver behind him speeding. He noticed that the driver was going too quickly for Milcarek to get out of the way. After the crash, Schalosy's wife rushed to the smoke coming from the car that had crashed into a tree, but the driver was nowhere to be found. Bystanders found and tackled the alleged driver, Miroslaw Ciszek, 34, as he tried to walk away, but he broke free, prosecutors said. Police allegedly found him three hours later in a nearby park. A blood test seven hours after the crash measured alcohol above the legal limit at .088, prosecutors said. Meanwhile, Milcarek was pronounced dead at a hospital.Schalosy said what happened has been on his mind ever since, though he was glad to see the alleged driver was arrested.“It brought me a bit of peace that at least he got caught — he got charged,” Schalosy said.A judge on Tuesday released Ciszek on electronic monitoring.
