As families across North Texas prepare for the start of a new school year, a Garland nonprofit is focusing on one of the most overlooked back-to-school necessities: shoes. Hope’s Door New Beginning Center has launched a month-long shoe drive to collect new shoes for children, tweens and teens w hose families are rebuilding their lives after experiencing domestic violence. The drive runs through the end of August and aims to help students return to school with confidence, dignity and a sense of normalcy. Hope’s Door provides services and support for individuals and families affected by domestic violence, helping survivors find safety, stability and resources as they rebuild their lives. While many back-to-school donation efforts center on backpacks and classroom supplies, leaders at Hope’s Door say the cost of shoes and clothing can create significant financial challenges for families working toward independence after leaving abusive situations. According to the National Retail Federation, families with children in elementary through high school are expected to spend an average of $863.86 preparing for the new school year. In addition to supplies, that spending includes clothing, shoes, and required technology items such as earbuds or headphones. “Every child deserves to walk into school feeling confident and ready to learn,” Megan Valdez, CEO of Hope’s Door New Beginning Center, said in a statement. “For families rebuilding after domestic violence, something as simple as a new pair of shoes can provide a sense of normalcy during an incredibly difficult time. Throughout August, our shoe drive is helping ensure children have the essentials they need to walk into the classroom with confidence, dignity, and the opportunity to focus on learning.” The organization is seeking donations of new shoes for children and teenagers. Needed sizes include children’s sizes 10 through 13 and 1 through 5, as well as adult sizes for teens. Organizers say closed-toe sneakers suitable for outdoor activities are preferred.
