Military officials Wednesday publicly identified a young Marine recruit who died last week after suffering a medical emergency at Camp Pendleton. Pvt. Aiden Craig, 18, was pronounced dead at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside last Wednesday, four days after being stricken by an unknown ailment during a physical fitness test, according to the Marine Corps. Recruits go through four phases of training over 13 weeks, which culminate in a 54-hour final test. According to the USMC training website, during the test, recruits “face food and sleep deprivation, complete 45 miles of marching, and tackle a series of physical and mental challenges. It’s the ultimate test of what they’ve learned—and it’s where they earn the title United States Marine.” It is unclear what phase of the process the recruit was in at the time of their death.
