Marcus’ 4 a.m. Wednesday forecast INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Active weather continues across central Indiana with flooding concerns this morning and additional severe storms expected this afternoon and evening. This Morning Flooding remains the primary concern across eastern and sou thern portions of central Indiana. Overnight storms produced torrential rainfall with rates exceeding 2 inches per hour in some locations. Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect from Madison County south through Decatur County where the heaviest rain fell. Many roads remain impassable, and water continues to rise in low-lying areas. If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and find an alternate route. It only takes a few inches of moving water to sweep a vehicle away. Today The severe weather threat ramps up again this afternoon as another round of strong to severe thunderstorms develops across the state. Timing: The best chance for storms will be this afternoon and evening. Like yesterday, school dismissal and the evening commute could get a little rocky. Main threats: Damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, with potential for gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines. Heavy rainfall of 2 to 3 inches possible in localized areas, adding to existing flood concerns. Isolated large hail possible with the strongest individual cells. Low tornado threat, but it cannot be completely ruled out. A Flood Watch remains in effect until Midnight for most of central and northern Indiana. High temperatures will reach the mid- to upper 80s before storms arrive, with heat index values in the low 90s. Winds will be out of the southwest at 10 to 15 mph ahead of the storms. Tonight Showers and thunderstorms will gradually move southeast through the overnight hours, exiting southern Indiana by daybreak Thursday. A weak cold front will slowly sink south across the state, helping to push the storm system out of the area. Overnight lows will fall into the upper 60s to lower 70s. Thursday Drier air begins to work in behind the front, but some uncertainty remains in the forecast. Areas south of Indianapolis could see additional showers or storms during the day as the front stalls near the Ohio River. Northern Indiana looks mainly dry with partly cloudy skies. There is a sharp temperature contrast developing: Areas north of the front will see highs in the upper 70s to near 80, while locations that stay south of the boundary could reach near 90 degrees. Any storms that develop Thursday will have a lower severe threat compared to today, but a few gusty storms will be possible. Friday Through the Weekend Friday: The front clears south, leaving us with a lower severe weather threat. Isolated showers or storms are possible, mainly during the afternoon, but coverage looks much more scattered. Highs in the lower 80s. Weekend: High pressure builds in from the north, pushing the storm track into the Great Lakes. This means mainly dry conditions for both Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will be on the rise with highs climbing from the mid-80s Saturday to the upper 80s and low 90s by Sunday as southerly flow returns. 7 day forecast: Another weather system may bring showers and storms back to the area Monday night into Tuesday as a cold front approaches from the north.
