A Queens couple says they plan to move out of their apartment after a woman allegedly claiming to be a dog walker was given a key at the front desk of their luxury building and entered their home while they were away. Yelim Kim and Bill Kim were on vacation when the woman let herself in to their Long Island City apartment late at night on July 24. Video from inside the apartment showed the woman, wearing a black dress and heels, lying on the couch before apparently realizing she was being recorded and ripping a camera from the wall. The camera first alerted them to the intruder. Yelim Kim said she “fully panicked.” The Kims called police and a friend, who confronted the woman before officers arrived. The couple said they later learned the woman had been handed the keys to their apartment by a doorman. According to Yelim Kim, the doorman allegedly felt pressured to hand over the keys because the woman was frantic, saying, ‘I need to get the dogs. I need to get the dogs.'” Bill Kim called it a “total violation of our privacy and security.” Their building, Halo LIC, which is managed by Goose Property Management, told residents in a letter, “An individual claiming to be a dog walker mistakenly received a key to an apartment at the front desk.” In its letter to residents, Goose Property Management said the employee who gave the woman the key had been fired, and employees had been retrained. Police said the woman was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Her mental health history is unclear. Bill Kim says he now tenses up every time he hears a noise in the hallway. The couple plans to move out. “I mean safety isn’t a luxury,” Yelim Kim said. “It’s just a standard.” The NYPD is investigating the incident as a burglary.
