Two pedestrians suffered non-life-threatening injuries in Union Square Sunday when they were struck by the driver of a pickup truck who a witness says was driving recklessly through a red light at the intersection.Shortly before 12:30 pm Sunday at O’Farrell and Cyril Magnin streets, in front of th e Handlery Union Square Hotel, the driver of a Ford pickup allegedly struck two people walking in the area before hitting a light pole, as the Chronicle reports. Both pedestrians were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, and the San Francisco Fire Department said they were in stable condition. The truck also collided with the front of a delivery truck, while video from ABC 7 showed extensive damage to the Ford’s front end. A witness account posted to Reddit described the truck traveling north on Cyril Magnin Street before entering the intersection against a red light. The witness said they heard tires screech and saw the truck approaching, after which it veered around traffic waiting to turn onto O’Farrell Street. The witness said the driver appeared to be traveling at roughly 40 to 45 mph and did not seem to slow before hitting the pole. They also said the pole may have prevented the truck from reaching more pedestrians.“I think the pole acted as a bollard of sorts and prevented the situation with pedestrians from being even worse,” they wrote.Per Reddit, the hotel had surveillance footage showing the truck approaching the intersection without slowing. The witness said they remained at the scene and provided statements to police.tsar73/RedditThey said the pedestrians appeared to have suffered relatively minor injuries, including a broken ankle and cuts, although those details have not been independently confirmed. The witness also took photos of the scene, which showed the light pole and street signs completely sheared off. The truck had also appeared to be wedged against a fire hydrant.tsar73/RedditThe pickup driver reportedly remained at the scene, and authorities are investigating what led to the crash. An ALERTSF notification was sent around 1 pm advising drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area.Just a few blocks away, a woman riding an scooter was fatally struck Friday morning at Market and Powell streets.Related: Woman on Scooter Fatally Struck By Truck at Market and PowellTop image: tsar73/Reddit ...read more read less
