Police say a woman was killed and a man was fighting for his life in the hospital Monday morning after the pair were shot in a double shooting that unfolded in North Philadelphia overnight. According to Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace, the incident unfolded just after midnight on the 270 0 block of North 24th Street, when officers responded to a report of a person with a gun. At that time, first responders found a 61-year-old woman and a man, 67, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Pace said. The pair were taken to a nearby hospital where, he told NBC10, the woman was pronounced shortly after arrival and the man was placed in critical condition. Initial investigation, he said, shows that both victims were shot outside a home on the block where one of the victims — possibly both — lived. At the scene, Pace said, investigators found blood, personal belongings and, at least, 20 spent bullet shells on the porch, stairs, sidewalk and in the street. However, investigators were initially unsure of the pair were the intended targets in this incident, Pace said, or if they were hit by gunfire intended for someone else. He said that no firearm was recovered and no arrests have yet been made. But, investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the scene in an attempt to learn more. According to police statistics, as of Sunday, August 9, 2026, there were 108 reported homicides in Philadelphia so far this year.
