The Park City and Wasatch High School girls soccer teams packed the stadium field at Quinn’s Junction for their rivalry game on Thursday night.  Family and friends of the players would have to wait until the game’s second half for any celebrations, however, with the two teams going back and forth until about the middle of the second half. Miners star midfielder Elsa Dellenbach broke the tie with 31 minutes left to go in the game, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Wasatch would equalize with 17 minutes to go, but Park City wasn’t rattled, helping to set up junior forward Riley Reese’s spectacular game-winner. As it appeared the game was headed for extra time, Reese received the ball just outside the top of the Wasatch penalty box. She sent a curving shot screaming toward the left side of the net, where the Wasatch goalkeeper got her hands on the ball, but it slowly dribbled past her into the back of the net. The Miners players and fans roared once more.  Park City was able to hold on in the game’s final nine minutes to secure the victory. The win moves the Miners to 2-0 this season. They also defeated Lone Peak in extra time on the road on Tuesday.  “I’m just really excited to score,” Reese said. “I’ve been looking for shots the whole game. I was also really happy because I wanted to finish the game out without going into overtime.” Dellenbach said a more aggressive mindset heading into the game’s second half helped Park City find the scoreboard.  The Miners haven’t lost to their rivals since the 2023 season.  “(It’s) good to open the season like this at home and set the tone for the rest of the season,” Dellenbach said. “Show them what we can do.” Head coach Anthony DiCicco feels his team didn’t play their best soccer Thursday but knows the margins in soccer are thin and that it’s always important to be able to eke out wins.  “There are a lot of things that we’ve done well,” DiCicco said. “And there are a lot of things that we have to build on. So we extract both those lessons.” Park City will recover, do a media day and have team building activities on Friday.  The Miners next game is a road contest against Olympus on Tuesday.  Park City has their eyes set on playing their best soccer heading into October’s playoffs.  “We’re always always looking toward playoffs,” Dellenbach said. “We’ve had good runs, deep runs, and I think we’re just almost there as far as becoming champions. … We’re looking forward to a good season, playing strong and getting into playoffs and hopefully competing until the end.” The post Miners girls soccer escapes Wasatch game with narrow victory appeared first on Park Record. ...read more read less
