A father, mother, and two young children jumped to safety from the second floor of an Exchange Street house on Friday to escape a fire. The mother injured her back, while the father and two kids — who jumped from a lower roof onto a nearby trampoline — escaped unscathed. That’s according to Fire Chief Daniel Coughlin, who said that firefighters got a report at 12:07 p.m. of smoke in a building at 278 Exchange St. As crews traveled down Grand Avenue towards the blaze, they could see an active fire and “a large amount of smoke in the area.” On scene, they found “a large volume of fire on the second floor going into the third floor.” Two adults — a husband and wife and their “very small children” — managed to escape from their second-floor apartment by jumping. “The father took the two children and jumped from a lower roof onto a trampoline,” Coughlin said. The fire department escalated to a second alarm “right away because of the extreme amount of fire. The fire was burning so hot that it melted the siding on the house next door.” Coughlin said it took around two hours to get the fire under control. He said American Medical Response (AMR) provided a “lot of extra water.” There were five ambulances on scene to providing air conditioning to cool down firefighters. Coughlin said that no firefighters were injured, and the department has just begun the investigation into what might have caused the fire. He said the first-floor tenants appear to have been at work at the time of the fire. “I give the firefighters a lot of credit,” Coughlin concluded. “In this heat, it was rough.
