Hoosier motorists react to governor’s decision to extend gas tax suspension INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Gov. Mike Braun declared a statewide energy emergency Wednesday, extending Indiana’s gas tax suspension through Sept. 5. The emergency takes effect Friday and Braun said disruptions to glob al oil shipping lanes caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and Canadian wildfires prompted the decision as gas prices rise. Braun said he reached an agreement with House and Senate leaders to use available state funds to cover the lost tax revenue. “This action will make life more affordable for Hoosier families and provide immediate substantial relief from continuing high gas prices,” Braun said. Central Indiana residents reacted to the news Wednesday evening. “It’s going to save my pockets because I got a (Dodge) Charger,” Billie Turner told News 8. “I take 93 (octane fuel), so as long as we stay low, I’m cool. I can drive without worrying about spending too much of a bankroll on gas. Anything removing taxes, I’m with it… I’m happy about it, and he can keep doing it.” “I think it’s good that he’s extending this gas tax because it helps out with families who are having a hard time right now affording being able to just fill up their cars on a weekly basis,” Jude Demilt said. “I think it’s just helping consumers save a little bit more money to be able to afford other things.” “It’s not sustainable,” Michelle Steele said. “I can’t imagine that going month after month after month, (it would) be sustainable. At some point, they have to pull the plug on it, so when do you do that? But I’m sure everyone appreciates it and I think it’s essential for families, especially with food prices going up and inflation and everything.” Braun said he will review the policy in 30 days to determine if another extension is necessary.
