Marcus’ 4 a.m. Wednesday forecast INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Quiet weather continues today across central Indiana, but don’t get too comfortable. Rain and storm chances return tonight and will persist through early next week, with the highest chances for heavy rain Thursday and Friday. Today The last portion of our recent quiet weather pattern will linger through this afternoon as high pressure moves east. Look for mostly sunny skies by mid-afternoon. Highs today will range from the mid 80s in central Indiana to near 90° in far southern Indiana. Tonight An upper-level disturbance will move toward the Midwest, pushing moisture into the state later this evening. Areas in northwest Indiana can expect scattered showers developing late tonight, continuing through at least Thursday morning. A few isolated thunderstorms are possible as well. Overnight lows will remain mild in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees across much of the state. Thursday Cloud cover will increase as moisture continues to stream into the area. While rain coverage may trend downward Thursday afternoon, the damp atmosphere will still allow for scattered showers and a stray thunderstorm throughout the day. The highest rain chances will be along and south of the I-74 corridor. Another wave of moisture is expected Thursday night, bringing a high chance of rain for the predawn hours Friday. Increased cloud cover will keep temperatures a bit cooler, with highs in the low 80s for most locations. Areas in far southern Indiana could still reach the mid-80s. Friday through Saturday An upper-level disturbance moving through the Upper Midwest will drive a cold front toward the Midwest by Friday afternoon. The front is expected to stall right across central Indiana. Areas that see repeated rounds of storms could pick up several inches of rain by Saturday night. The flood threat will be highest south and east of Indianapolis before the moisture axis pushes south into Kentucky. Highs will be in the mid-80s both Friday and Saturday, but with the high humidity, heat index values could reach the low to mid-90s at times. Sunday through Tuesday A broader shift in the weather pattern occurs Sunday as high pressure over the central Plains expands eastward. This will bring a northwesterly flow over central Indiana, which should help dry things out a bit. Rain chances through early next week will be mostly limited to central and northern counties. We’re not expecting widespread rain like we’ll see late this week, but a few pop-up showers or storms can’t be ruled out during the afternoon and evening hours. Daytime highs will remain near or slightly above seasonal normals in the mid to upper 80s.
