Washington Square Mall future plans unveiled INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Plans for the future of Washington Square are taking shape following a public reveal of redevelopment designs. Republican City-County Councilor Michael-Paul Hart and architects from Schmidt Associates presented the vision to more than 150 community members Monday at the Warren Township School Administrators building. Following a market analysis and town hall feedback, architects proposed a mixed-use development. The plan includes a sports complex featuring an indoor baseball arena or pickleball courts, a medical facility, adult education space, and a dining village. The project also incorporates housing, including rental townhomes, alongside pedestrian paths and green spaces. “This is a thriving community,” Joseph Jarzen of Schmidt Associates said. “There are businesses here that have their home and livelihood here. And there’s a community that’s passionate about wanting things here. If we can encourage developers to look at this space, that’s a good thing.” Organizers said anchor stores such as Target, Kroger, and AMC will remain. However, developers plan to transform abandoned sections of the property, including the parking lots. The project aims to create new opportunities for the area. “This is a vision, but we are bringing the vision now to the neighbors, to the city,” Hart said. Attendees, including 26-year east side resident David Fletcher, said they were open to the ideas. “I think it’s going to be good for the community,” Fletcher said. “I used to go 20 something years ago when there were more stores and there was a reason.” Presenters described the project as a “comeback” for Washington Square, intentionally dropping the word “mall” from the title. Their findings suggest residents want a deeper connection to the area but are discouraged by potholes and deteriorating structures. Presenters noted many residents currently travel elsewhere to shop. One business owner, who has operated in the space for more than 20 years, said the development will help local commerce. Anthony Scott, owner of Kang Collection, said, “This is an opportunity to change the what the east side looks like to the surrounding communities. Those surrounding communities see our potholes our derelict buildings abandon store fronts and this is like having a facelift for everyone in the community.” The next steps involve securing investors and developers.
