Mendocino County fire prompts evacuations, closes stretch of Hwy. 101

On Saturday, crews were battling a fire with a dangerous rate of spread that prompted evacuations and closed a stretch of Highway 101, according to Cal Fire.
The sheriff’s office said the fire sparked near the 3600 block of Feliz Creek Road just before 3:40 p.m. According to the Cal Fire websit
e, the flames have burned 550 acres and has been 5% contained as of 8:30 p.m.
The blaze, which Cal Fire said has a dangerous rate of spread, prompted evacuation orders for the MEN-2HOP04 and MEN-2UKV29 zones. Evacuation warnings were issued for the MEN-2HOP01, MEN-2UKV20, MEN-2UKV21 and MEN-2UKV23 zones.
The fire, dubbed the Feliz Fire has also prompted the closure of Highway 101 from Henry Station Road to Highway 175, according to Cal Fire.
Cal Fire said temporary evacuation points were established at the Mendocino County Office of Education at 2240 Old River Road in Ukiah and United Disaster Relief at 650 Babcock Lane in Ukiah.
Authorities added there is also a large animal shelter available at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds at 1055 N. State St. in Ukiah and a Small Animal Shelter at 298 Plant Road.
