Small business owners in Gloucester and Camden counties in New Jersey, as well as Philadelphia, are warning others after surveillance video appeared to capture suspects installing skimming devices on payment terminals.  NBC10 obtained surveillance video from the owner of 3 Brothers Mini Market i n National Park, New Jersey, that appears to show someone placing a skimming device over a payment terminal. The installation takes only seconds, making it easy to miss.  Richard Espinal, who owns the corner store, believes the suspects knew exactly what they were doing.  “Those people look like professionals,” Espinal said.  Espinal said one person distracted an employee while another quickly installed the device.  A similar incident was also captured on surveillance video at a bodega in Philadelphia. The devices are designed to steal customers’ card information.  Business owners said the impact goes beyond potential financial losses. They worry that the scams also damage the trust they have worked for years to build with customers.  “This is really detrimental for our small businesses,” said Ashley Estevez of Movimiento Tricolor, a South Jersey nonprofit focused on leadership and economic opportunities for the Latino community. Estevez said the Latino small business organization in Camden County has learned of at least three similar cases this month. In each case, she said, the device was discovered before any customer information was stolen.  Business owners are now using social media and WhatsApp groups to alert one another about the scam.  “We use a WhatsApp chat to communicate about developments and the latest, so right now we’re using it to communicate with folks about what’s happening right now,” Estevez said.  Camden police said customers should watch for warning signs before using a payment terminal.  “You’ll see when you try to enter your PIN it’s hard, or they have different colors on it,” Lt. Dona said.  Police also urged business owners to contact authorities immediately if they find a skimming device inside their store.  Philadelphia police told NBC10 that these types of scams are also being investigated by federal authorities.  This story was originally reported for broadcast by NBC Philadelphia.
