Former Johnson County Sheriff Adam King has been indicted again on charges of “corrupt influence: retaliation against a witness” and “tampering with or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair” in connection with a previous sexual assault investigation involving fellow employees. The indictment, filed on July 29, alleges that King “intentionally and knowingly threaten[ed] to harm or did harm another, namely Chief Deputy James Saulter,” by taking other adverse personnel action against Saulter after he reported King for alleged official oppression to Johnson County officials last June. The threat, the indictment alleges, was in retaliation for Saulter’s role as a witness in the investigation. The indictment also alleges that King altered, destroyed, or concealed a laptop computer “with intent to impair its verity, legibility, or availability as evidence in the investigation.” King’s attorneys, Mark G. Daniel, Matthew J. Smid, and William Mason, issued a statement on Friday, July 31, in response to the new indictments. “This remains a tremendous waste of resources,” King’s attorneys said. “Sheriff King is looking forward to trial. The alleged retaliation case is a re-indictment of the old retaliation indictment. This means that the State felt their previous retaliation indictment was insufficient. It remains insufficient and without merit. “The new allegation regarding the Sheriff’s laptop computer is completely baseless. Law enforcement has never asked the Sheriff for his computer or even expressed an interest in his computer. This month, after the State’s failed attempt to convict the Sheriff, the Johnson County IT Department contacted the Sheriff and requested his computer. The Sheriff complied with that request and provided his computer.” King was initially arrested in August 2025 following a grand jury indictment on multiple felony charges, county officials said. Earlier this month, a judge declared a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict in King’s criminal trial, where he was charged with two counts of retaliation and one count of official oppression. According to a grand jury indictment from 2025, King was accused of verbally and sexually harassing an employee and creating an environment of unwanted sexual attention toward female employees. The 2025 indictment also alleged that King retaliated against former deputy Saulter after he reported King to Johnson County officials. The matter was referred to the Texas Rangers for an independent investigation.
