Firefighters made progress overnight on the Woodside Fire along the Sonoma County coast, increasing containment to 30 percent Friday morning as crews continued battling the wildfire near state Highway 1. A Spare the Air alert issued in the Bay Area due to the blaze was extended through Saturday, authorities announced Friday. The fire has burned about 142 acres, according to the latest update from Cal Fire. Overnight, favorable weather conditions allowed firefighters to strengthen containment, the agency said. The wildfire started about 1:45 p.m. Thursday in the 24000 block of Highway 1 near Timber Cove. There have been no reports of injuries, as of 7 a.m. Friday. Authorities urge residents to stay away from the area, so firefighters and emergency crews can continue their work safely. Highway 1 remains closed between Timber Cove Road and Stewarts Point-Skaggs Springs Road because of the fire. An evacuation order remains in effect for Zone SON-1D1, which includes Salt Point State Park, Timber Cove and nearby areas. Evacuation orders had also been issued for Stillwater Cove Regional Park, Ocean Cove Private Camp and the Timber Cove subdivision. Zone SON-1D2, northwest of Cazadero, remains under an evacuation warning. A temporary evacuation shelter remains open at Laguna High School, formerly El Molino High School, at 7050 Covey Road in Forestville. Authorities said anyone needing help evacuating pets can contact Sonoma CART, while help for livestock is available through NorCal Livestock Evac. The cause of the fire remains to be confirmed. Woodside Fire triggers Spare the Air alert The Bay Area Air District’s Spare the Air alert had gone into effect because of smoke from the fire, with unhealthy air quality expected in parts of the North Bay. During a Spare the Air alert, burning wood both indoors and outdoors becomes illegal. First-time violators can choose to take a wood smoke awareness course instead of paying a $100 fine. Ticket amounts increase with subsequent violations. Gas, propane, or electric fireplaces are allowed to run during Spare the Air Alerts. Homes where wood stoves or closed fireplaces are the sole sources of heat may qualify for an exemption.
